How to Prepare your Home for the Rainy Season

Water damage is one of the leading causes that can damage your home’s foundation, which is the main component that holds your home together. Damp wood can invite termites, carpenter ants, mold and mildew. These can cause serious financial and health issues.

Here are some pointers on what to do before the rainy season hits or on a regular basis to ensure your home is protected from this:

  1. Make sure your gutters are clean and clear

  2. Know that your down spout directs water, they need to be 5 to 10 feet away from your home

  1. Make sure your yard is sloped 6 inches over a 10 foot span directed away from your homes foundation

  2. Don’t let dirt and soil around your house get too dry. If it gets too dry the soil around your house will shrink and a big rain will cause it to expand and put pressure back on the foundation of the home.

  3. Check for water leaks. If you find them act immediately (signs are dark spots on pipes, inside sink cabinets, stains on ceilings, toilets that rock.)

  4. Once a year check your roof for missing and cracked shingles.

Here in California the weather keeps changing. It has caught many off guard. Be pro-active. If you are unable physically to do these things yourself, hire someone and be safe.
